RECEPTION CLASSROOM, HOLYWELL CP SCHOOL, UPCHURCH, KENT
The new RECEPTION CLASSROOM and playground, has been sited adjacent to the year one classroom in the main school building and linked by a canopy.
By nestling the new building down into the existing grassed mound, any impact on the housing in Church Farm Road backing onto the school's North West boundary, would be minimal. The "wild garden" will be planted with indigenous species of grasses to attract local wildlife. Apart from the obvious advantages of establishing such a garden within the school, protective fencing will allow safe viewing without disturbing the wildlife. A padlocked gate will allow maintenance access to the roof. The form of the new building is "horn" shaped". The narrowest part of the horn accommodates the ENTRANCE LOBBY, This widens out to the largest space for the RECEPTION CLASSROOM. In between are cellular rooms for TOILETS, COATS and STORES. The building has been designed so that there is no pure circulation space. The access from the ENTRANCE LOBBY to the RECEPTION CLASSROOM will be used as a teaching space and WET AREA. The gentle outer curve of the RECEPTION CLASSROOM is conducive to teaching whilst the inner curve of the external wall forms one side of the secure playground. The external cedar wood cladding will be complemented by the use of natural woods on the inside. The gently slanting windows will be glazed in solar reflective safety glass. The internal perimeter of windows will be lined with hinged bench seating with storage under. The flag poles will be used as supports for the canopy and vents for the toilets and condensing boiler flue. |
